Seller Insight
“The garden was a huge attraction for the space, and the house had a chocolate-box charm – both have a wonderful feeling about them, with a lovely air of mystery and magic,” say the owners of this charming period cottage. “We didn’t know much about the area and were generally looking in locations with a sense of community where we could easily commute to London, and Sawtry was a great fit.”
Believed to have been built in 1610, the cottage was extended in 1996 in keeping with its original features, such as beams, oak doors, and cosy low ceilings. “We’ve not needed to do much to the interior other than keep it in good order,” the owners explain. The garden, however, which surrounds the house, has been a true passion project. “We’ve loved developing and tending to the garden. From the large patio leading from the kitchen and well-established trees – including a glorious horse chestnut – to a pond and a summerhouse/garden study, it’s a quintessentially English country garden, ideal for relaxing, enjoying quiet moments, and breathing in the country air.”
Located at the end of a cul-de-sac with no passing traffic, the setting is wonderfully peaceful. “Living here really gives you a sense of your own private space – a quiet haven away from it all. It’s a bit like living in a holiday cottage!” explain the owners. “The skies are beautifully dark at night, making for excellent stargazing, and for dog owners, the garden is completely dog-proof, as our three dogs will happily verify! There are plenty of dogs in the neighbourhood, which is always a great way to meet people. It’s also the kind of place where you can chat over the fence with neighbours or join in with a street party.”
The drive is secured with a field gate and offers space for three vehicles to park comfortably. “The garage, currently used for storage and as a workshop, adds convenience,” say the owners. Inside, the ground floor is largely made up of a spacious sitting room and kitchen, with two staircases leading to three first-floor bedrooms, all of which enjoy lovely views over the sunny garden.
With an excellent flow between indoors and outdoors, the owners note, “The outdoor space is wonderful for entertaining during the summer months.” They add, “Fitted with electrics, the summerhouse is the most wonderful place to work from home – it almost makes sitting at a computer all day enjoyable!”
